I held a baby squirrel this afternoon.

So, so sweet... It was about 6 weeks old and so incredibly trusting.

Here's the story:

They chopped down a pine tree on campus yesterday. At some point, they found a hole in the trunk and inside that hole were three baby squirrels.

Long story short: Human intervention is definitely necessary if these babies are to survive. One of our staff members adopted all three of them for the weekend. I might take over the care of two of the squirrels on Monday.

How wonderful it was to hold one of the babies and gaze upon the other two while they remained curled up together in their hopefully cozy sleep...

  • We found a baby something one time in Houston (squirrel? rabbit?). There is a rescue group that will help. I think we got in touch through the SPCA.

  • You are right, Laura! There is actually a lady who picks up wildlife from the SPCA. There is also this group:

TWRC has a full house right now. The good thing is that my friend is doing a great job of taking care of the squirrels. :)
